Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where she lived until she was 7 when her family moved to the suburbs, Rhona Melsky is a self-proclaimed native and devout New Yorker. She is first and foremost a journalist, writer and editor. Add in copywriter, content writer and a dash of communications, public relations and even some event planning. She spent much of her adult life living in Manhattan, which she considers her true home.

She grew up wanting to do a variety of things from being a singer to a lawyer to an astronaut. But Rhona always put pen to paper and wrote, whether it was her very first book report on Louis Armstrong or drawing and writing political cartoons for a social studies class, she always had the gift of storytelling.

Rhona’s father at one time had been a jazz saxophone player and singer. When she expressed her desire to sing and play guitar and later play piano as well, her father said, “You can end up singing and playing whatever you want, but you have to start with classical.” It was great advice.

The many years of voice training in opera and classical music gave this mezzo soprano great control and power. And although her voice teacher wanted her to attend Juilliard, she decided against it and instead majored in English with a focus in writing. She also did not pursue another dream of law school, which she tossed around for years. She stuck with writing. And when it comes to music, she has been in a variety of bands from rock n roll to swing.

After living out in Arizona for 14 years where she moved to help with family, Rhona is now back home on the East Coast with her husband and three rescue dogs. She enjoys taking her camera and walking the streets of New York City to capture the amazing and interesting people of the city, street scenes, skyline, local bands, and the city’s dogs and their humans. Rhona loves to ski, read, travel, laugh as hard as she can, and play with her dogs. A huge animal lover, she has been an animal advocate and rescuer for many years. She sits on the advisory board of directors of Wildhorse, a 501 (c ) (3) animal rescue and sanctuary, and serves as volunteer publicity coordinator for Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue.
